Separate Spheres

The term separate spheres describes the split of home and public spheres along gender lines, and is generally used in women's history and gender history. The idea of separate spheres dictates that men should have power in the public sphere and women should be confined to the private sphere of domestic life. For example, men should have jobs that involved economics, politics, and business, while women should remain in their homes and housewives and mothers.
