Jim Crow
Jim Crow was a set of laws enacted on the state and national level between 1876 and 1965. Working under the "separate but equal" mantra, these laws mandated racial segregation in all public places. In reality, Jim Crow led to public facilities for blacks that were vastly inferior to those of whites. Jim Crow only applied to Southern states although segregation did take place in Northern states, it just was not mandated by law.
